After a few warm days the weather has turned chilly again but the kitchen stays cozy with the woodstove going. Saint Patrick’s day is almost here and I always get a little excited for it. The days are getting longer and the winter blues are starting to slip away. I have started spending time out in the garden cleaning up the beds while watching potato sprouts peak through the soil and pea shoots slowly stretch their out tendrils . At last, Spring is almost here and I can’t wait!
My mother always cooks up a big dinner of corned beef with cabbage and potatoes for the entire family. I have learned to cherish those traditions that make life more meaningful. Another traditional treat we enjoy around St Patrick’s Day is Irish Soda Bread. We would have it with our afternoon cup of tea. Haven’t you noticed how much more delicious a certain food is when you only get to partake of it on special occasions.
This morning I was so happy to be working in the garden and I decided to celebrate by making some Irish Soda Bread. Recently I have challenged myself to make more sourdough bread. Traditionally this is not a sourdough recipe but since I accumulate sourdough starter quickly, I wanted to try a Sourdough Irish Soda Bread recipe. I found a lovely one on The Clever Carrot blog and was quite pleased with the results.
Next week I will be traveling home to visit my family. We will celebrate the holiday and my upcoming birthday. I am going to make a second loaf for afternoon tea with my mother. All the best conversations happen over a cup of tea.
