Natural Holiday Planters

Natural Holiday Planters
I used grapevines to make an arch in the pots and wrapped them with ivy that was growing in a vacant lot next door. Under the arch, I filled the space with juniper and pinecones. The pine branches were too high for me to reach but the pinecones were on the ground.

There are so many beautiful Christmas decorations out there. Looking at all the holiday decorations is always so much fun. They motivate you to step up your own holiday decorating, only to stop in your tracks when you see just how expensive they are. Why don’t we just try the real thing. These natural holiday planters are free and take little time to make.

During the winter months, it can seem challenging to come up with ideas to fill our decorative pots. It really is just a short span of time between the mums in the fall and pansies in the Spring. No one wants to see empty pots sitting on their front steps. There isn’t much planting options except for small evergreen trees or shrubs. With a little creativity, you can make beautiful seasonal arrangements that will brighten up your entrance. No watering required.

How to Find Materials for Making Natural Holiday Planters

Look around your property and along the street. Observe all the different kinds of greenery. Are there pinecones, holly, juniper or nandina berries? Get some clippers and a bucket then start to walk around taking cuttings of the different plants that catch your eye. Try to vary the different types of greenery. Ivy, Virginia Creeper, or any other vine will add a nice touch also. Dried flower heads from your garden or in nature would also be beautiful.

Decorating the Planters

If the soil in your pots is frozen, put them in the garage to thaw for a bit. This will make it easier to use the soil to hold the greenery in place. Think of your pots as a vase, if that makes it easier to figure out how to arrange them. Placing a bow on the arrangement will add a pop of color if you feel it needs a little something extra. Play around with it until you are happy with your creation.

The plants should last all season. You can easily replace any greenery if it isn’t holding up as well as the rest. Once the planters are done, they are maintenance free. These pots can be as simple or complicated as you like. Have fun and then go back inside and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate.
