There is a sense of wonder that fills me when I see a beautiful garden. Walking through a flower garden can feel as though you are in a painting. Each plant on it’s own is pretty, but when the gardener brings a variety of different plants together, they become a work of art. My many gardening failures have instilled an even greater appreciation for a well loved garden. Having a garden can be such a rewarding experience. Budget friendly gardening gives you the opportunity to enjoy those benefits at home

Designing a garden plan can be so much fun until you realize just how much each plant will cost. Suddenly this little project is adding up to hundreds of dollars and more work than you realized. Let’s slow down and start small. (I am very much speaking to myself at this moment.) With a little patience and planning, you can have the garden you want without overspending.
Start small and add a little more each year. This will give you time to learn what grows well in your garden without spending a fortune or becoming overwhelmed. Here are some tips that will help you get closer to the garden you’re dreaming of.
Budget Friendly Gardening Tips
- If you are completely new to gardening or have moved to a new property, it is important to get familiar with your yard. Perhaps that spot seems sunny now but in the summer a tree could provide shade. Does the area flood after a heavy rain?
- Choose a gardening spot that you walk by everyday. If you see the garden daily, you will be more likely to keep up with watering and weeding it.
- Notice what colors combinations you enjoy most. Then look for plants that bloom for long periods of time in those colors. At first, you may want to limit your colors. As you grow your garden and start to know what you really like, then you can add more color and variety. Limiting your options will help with overwhelm.
- Look around your yard and see if you already have plants that can be divided and used in your new garden.
- If you know any gardeners, tell them you want to start a garden and share your plans with them. They may have some helpful tips, and possibly give you some free plants that they needed to divide.
- Look further than your local garden center. Etsy has a large selection of plant starts. These may not look impressive at first, but they grow quickly and are much cheaper than purchasing the same, but more established plants at a garden center.
- Try growing a few plants from seed. Growing plants from seed is very rewarding.
- Look out for end of season sales for perennials.
Before you know it, you will be enjoying your beautiful garden. In the beginning it will feel as though your garden is taking for ever to come together. You will be surprised how much growth you see each year. Have fun, enjoy the process and get outside.
