Even if you have tried homemade laundry detergents before and failed, I urge you to try this one. Have you dealt with towels that don’t seem to absorb, white build up on your clothes, or maybe your clothes just didn’t smell clean. Well you won’t have those issues now with this natural laundry detergent recipe. Try it, you will be glad you did.
Supplies to Make This Natural Laundry Detergent
- Grater (I use a box grater)
- Medium size pot
- Measuring cup
- 5 Gallon bucket with lid-You don’t need a Gamma Seal lid for this, just a regular lid works fine.
- Long handled Spoon to stir
Ingredients
- 1 cup Washing Soda
- 1 cup Borax
- 1- 5 ounce bar Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap Bar (I have used Kirk’s but it never seems to thicken right.) I use this.
Method
Grate the soap bar and set aside. You don’t need a special grater just for soap. This is a natural soap and just as safe as dish soap.
Pour the washing soda and borax into the bucket. Add enough warm water to dissolve. A quart should be fine. Set aside.
Warm a quart of water in your pot. Add grated soap and stir until melted. Stir constantly. When ready, add soapy water to the five gallon bucket.
Fill the bucket with warm water. Leave enough room at the top to be able to move the bucket without spilling. Stir the soap well and cover with lid.
You can add a scent with essential oil before letting sit overnight. Dr. Bronner’s does offer several different scents with their soap also. Let soap sit overnight to thicken. If storage is an issue, you can pour the soap into a smaller container and store the bucket elsewhere.
Use a 1/4 cup of detergent per load. This batch will last you a long time.
